Save Life, Donate a Blood

More blood needed in preparation for natural disasters

Every two seconds, a person in the United States will need blood to recover from serious injuries, major surgeries, or chronic illnesses. What happens when natural disasters arrive in the Philippines where blood donations are more in demand than ever?
A person who gets into a car accident may require up to 100 pints of blood to stay alive. According to the American Red Cross, only one pint of blood can be donated by a person during transfusion, highlighting the potential imbalance between the need and availability of blood in times of public crises.
“We’re no stranger to earthquakes,” said Carmie de Leon, vice president for sales and marketing of Healthway Medical. “The recent earthquake in Nepal curtailed the lives of more than 8,000 people, and required them to seek more blood to treat those who are terribly wounded.”
She added, “The same episode may happen to the Philippines given that there’s a rising fear of the 7.6-magnitude strong earthquake.”
Metro Manila is prone to earthquakes since it is surrounded by active faults—the West Valley and East Valley Faults. According to the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), residents in Metro Manila and nearby provinces should prepare for the “mega earthquake” which could put the lives of thousands of people on the line.
“We need to be prepared,” De Leon said. “While keeping a disaster preparedness kit with rechargeable flash lights, face towels, whistles, and other disaster must-haves will make us ready, there’s also a need to bank blood to prepare for the worst.”
She added, “Blood donation will only take up 45 minutes of a person’s time, but the outcome transcends a lifetime.”
One donor could actually help save the lives of three people who need to receive blood transfusion, according to the American Red Cross. But de Leon said that “before Filipinos start rolling up their sleeves to prepare for blood donation, they must first understand what the process means, what it is for, and how it will also benefit them in the long run.”
Blood transfusion is an indispensable component of healthcare where the donor’s blood is added to the recipient’s own blood. During the process, certain parts of the blood are delivered through an intravenous (IV) line that’s connected to one of the veins in the arm.

While blood donation has been considered as an important pillar in saving millions of lives around the world during natural disasters—especially during earthquakes—de Leon said that not everyone can freely submit themselves to healthcare institutions to donate blood.
“Despite that voluntary blood donation is being pushed forward by concerned medical providers, different factors need to be considered first,” de Leon said. “Filipinos should take a personal assessment of themselves, putting into consideration their age, weight, and health conditions.”
A person’s age and weight is generally considered prior to being allowed to donate blood. Other factors include considerations regarding factors such as body temperature, history of hepatitis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma, low and high blood pressure, and other blood related conditons.
The next step is to identify the donor’s blood type. Your blood will be tested to determine your blood type—A, B, AB or O—and your Rh factor. The Rh factor is identified by the presence (Rh positive) or absence (Rh negative) of a specific antigen in the blood. De Leon added, “In any emergency, people with type O negative red blood cells may transfer their blood to anyone especially during life-threatening situations.
If you want to start donating blood, Healthway Medical—the most trusted and preferred mall-based clinic in the Philippines—offers laboratory blood tests to adults to help them identify if they are eligible for transfusion.
“Specific examinations are needed to ensure that the blood being donated is safe,” de Leon said. “While these donors give a part of themselves to save lives, they, in return, also reap optimum health benefits.”
Donating blood is known for preserving cardiovascular health by reducing blood viscosity which eliminates the iron that possibly oxidizes in your blood, and minimizes the risk of acquiring cancer.
“The best way to guarantee that you are eligible to undergo blood transfusion is to keep a close watch of your health,” de Leon said. “This is why having enough sleep, eating right, exercising, and de-stressing (S.E.E.D.) is important. If you aim to give others the benefit to have a better quality of life, you also have to ensure your health round-the-clock.”
De Leon concluded, “When natural disasters take form in the Philippines, we’ve got no one else to hold on to but each other. While we still have time, we need to bank more safe blood from volunteers who have a strong commitment to save lives. And that person is you.”
If you want to donate blood, e-mail Red Cross Philippines at prc@redcross.org.ph or call (02) 790-2329.
To check your blood type in preparation for your transfusion, visit any Healthway Medical clinics at the Alabang Town Center, Shangri-la Plaza, Market! Market!, Festival Mall, Healthway Manila, SM The Block and Greenbelt 5.

Stress Reliver

Natural Oil Review

Stress reliver, I have been carrying this soothing oil in my bag for more than how many years. I really can't remember.

This was formulated by my good friend Jessica O Hara, a dedicated homeschool mom at the same time entrepreneur. She encourages me to also go into business but maybe my gift is not there. I triied but it's seasonal.

This oil has been useful whenever i travel and when I want to relax from a days schedule Everytime I sit and get tired I get the oil and
damp it on my palm or put a little on my nape or forehead. It soothes me.

It also help reduces pain whenever i feel my body aching because of my busy schedule at home and events. Especially after my Zumba Wednesday.

The oil is all natural and organic and i already have friends who tried it and ordered some.

This oil is an aroma theraphy for me  at the same time massage and soothing oil for.

I will highly recommend this oil for
moms and the whole family.

Watch out for my review of her other beauty products.

Smile More Frown Less

In this generation there are different sickness that comes up, we don't really know how it is acquired.
Stress is a major factor and worry too.

But to what I see now, having a positive outlook, Faith in God can be a big factor.
when you laugh and smile you will lessen the baggage you are carrying and will feel released from worrying.

I love to watch comedy films because it doesn't make me use my brain but it entertains me. I tried watching heavy drama and crime movies it just disappoints me because I was so engrossed with the movie that I am so affected.

Yes we have to be serious at times but let us keep ourself happy and worry free.

Memories of a Scar

SCARVIVORS KEEP STORIES, NOT SCARS

CONTRACTUBEX®

Scars may be a reminder of pain and personal tragedy. However, scars are also a sign of healing wounds. They are a testament to an individual’s courage and resilience.  Scars mean closure on whatever pain and tragedy has happened, and it is something that can be visually improved as part of the healing process.

Scarvivor, is an advocacy from the country’s leading scar management brand Contractubex® (Extractum Cepae + Heparin + Allantoin), in support of the burn centers of the Philippines, and the Philippine Association of Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeons (PAPRAS) mission. As part of the advocacy, Contractubex proudly shares inspirational and life-changing stories from 6 courageous SCARvivors.

“There were issues with those big scars, particularly after my first modified radical mastectomy when I was just 28. Then, I realized It’s about getting well.
What you went through. And getting over that,” says Nikoy de Guzman, who has undergone a double mastectomy.

“Hindi ka lang scarred physically. Pati yung self-esteem mo natamaan. Nung time na yun, I didn’t want people looking at my scars. Ngayon, I know there’s  more about me than my scars,” shares Sherilyn Bruan, a survivor of the Ozone Disco fire.

“My scars are very big and my left leg was deformed. It was a very difficult experience, but with the help of many loving people especially my Mom and  Dad, I am now on my road to complete recovery,” says Giboy Billena, a 13-year- old bone cancer survivor.

“Dahil sa scars, dati binubully ako. Sinusulatan yung libro ko ng sunog. Ganun.  Pero hindi ko hinayaang masira ang buhay ko,” says Rubylyn Cua Rodel, who got burned in an accident.

“My experience has been a painful struggle. But I didn’t let it hinder me from doing the things I wanted to do. I want others to know that you can be so much more than your scars. Just trust yourself and your will to fight,” shares Dwight  Bayona, a racer who lost his leg in an accident.

“Ang mahalaga, muli akong makabalik sa aking tungkulin. Dala ng paninilbihan  ang sugat na ito, nagbibigay sa akin ng lakas ng loob,” according to Richard  Tagapan, a PNP SAF officer injured in the line of duty.

The Scarvivors event press launch on August 27, 2015, 10 am at Amici Restaurant, features talks from Dr Jose Joven Cruz, President of PAPRAS; Dr. Dorothy Dy Ching Bing, Burn Rehabilitation Consultant on burn centers in the Philippines; and Nikoy De Guzman, one of the SCARvivors, for the closing remarks.

The SCARvivor exhibit at Exhibit Space 3, UGF Building A, SM Megamall runs  from August 27, 2015 to September 2, 2015.

We encourage you to be part of the advocacy by visiting the exhibit and extending your support to other SCARvivors out there.

You can also support the SCARvivor advocacy by purchasing Contractubex®.  For every Contractubex® purchased, patients from selected burn centers will be  given their own SCARvivor Kit. This is in line with the commitment of Contractubex® to helping patients manage scars, so that someday, being SCARvivors themselves, only their stories of hope and courage remain.
